Reynolds leads Cardinals to fifth

INDIANOLA — Newton’s Cardinals had two golfers shoot in the 70s and two more in the  higher 80s for the first competition of the 2014 season Monday. The Cardinals finished fifth out of an eight-team field at the Indianola Invitational.

Sophomore Austin Reynolds rang up a 74 to lead the Cardinals on the Indianola Country Club golf course. Reynolds tied for fifth as an individual in the 18-hole tournament.

Junior Derek Damman shot a 79 for Newton. Juniors Jordan Henning and Payton Thomas carded scores of 86 and 88, respectively. The four put together a team score of 327 for the Cardinals.

“Austin shot an outstanding round of 74. This young man has really worked hard to get to this point. I believe he is going to have a breakout year for us,” said Pat Riley, Newton head coach. “Derek had a great round and is certainly capable of shooting even lower than that.”

Ottumwa won the tournament with a four-man score of 292. Des Moines Roosevelt finished second with a 304 followed by Indianola at 313 and Ankeny at 319.

“I think we shot pretty well today. I was really pleased with Jordan Henning and Payton Thomas’s scores and I know they will continue to improve throughout the season,” Riley said.

“Devin (Shores) and Tyler (Thongvanh) struggled a little today, but I have no doubt that the next meet will be different. These two seniors have worked harder than any other pair of seniors I have ever had. They will be a huge part of our success this season.”

Newton travels to Mason City Monday.
