Newton Police Department

• A 14-year-old juvenile is charged with third-degree burglary after authorities were called to 1610 N. Fourth Ave. W. at 9:20 a.m. Friday. The juvenile entered a home without the occupant knowing and was found to have taken money and make-up from the victim’s purse. The victim verified that no one else had taken the money since it was placed there but the juvenile denied taking it. The juvenile was cited and released to appear.

• A 15-year-old juvenile is charged with unlawful possession of prescription drug, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of controlled substance after authorities found the juvenile was found at the 400 block of S. 11th Ave. W. at 12:51 p.m. Friday. After identified, the officers searched the juvenile and found unidentified pills, meth and a meth pipe. The juvenile had an order for immediate detention and was taken into custody.

• A 16-year-old juvenile is charged with fifth-degree theft after authorities were called to Wal-Mart at 12:46 p.m. Aug. 11. Officers were told the juvenile attempted to take a charger and leave without paying for it. The juvenile was cited and released to appear.

• Amy L. Atwood, 24, of Newton, is charged with operating while intoxicated after authorities pulled over the vehicle at 1000 W. Fourth St. S. at 6:22 p.m. Thursday. Officers noticed a vehicle make a sweeping left turn, almost striking a parked vehicle then pulling up over the curb and stopping over the sidewalk. Officers asked Atwood to exit the vehicle and while walking to the police car she lost her balance. She failed the field sobriety tests and had a BAC of .165. She was cited and released to appear.

• Micheal A. Ballard, 35, of Newton, is charged with public intoxication, second offense after authorities were called to 524 N. Third Ave. E. at 9:07 p.m. Aug. 3. The Newton Police and Ambulance were called to the scene of a man lying on the ground. He admitted to drinking six beers and while walking with his girlfriend, fell and broke his ankle. After arriving at Skiff Medical Center, he was found to have a BAC of .252. He was taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Max C. Cox, 44, of Newton is charged with driving while license barred after authorities pulled over a vehicle in the 200 Block of S. Third Ave. E. at 11:27 p.m. Sunday.  Officers noticed an inoperable plate light and when asked for documentation Cox produced an identification card. Officers ran his driver’s license which came back as barred for habitual offender. He was taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Randi L. Hamilton, 32, of Newton, is charged with two counts of forgery and possession of drug paraphernalia after authorities were called to Check N Go at 2:37 p.m. Firday. Hamilton was attempting to cash two checks in the amounts of $165 and $170 from account that did not belong to her without the knowledge of the account owner. She was arrested on a warrant for failure to attend and was found with a spoon, four syringes and baggie with a white residue that she admitted were for her meth use. She was taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Melissa E. Jones, 18, of Newton, is charged with fifth-degree theft after authorities were called to Wal-Mart at 12:18 a.m. Monday. The officers found that an accomplice had placed alcohol in his pants. Together with Jones, they paid for toilet paper but not the alcohol. The loss prevention employee stopped the pair but the accomplice took off running through the parking lot, while Jones stayed on the scene. The estimated cost was less than $100. She was cited and released to appear.

• Brandon S. Morris, 26, of Reasnor, is charged with operating while intoxicated second offense after authorities pulled over a vehicle at 100 W. Second St. N. at 1:59 a.m. Saturday. Officers were originally called to the Scoreboard Bar after there was a report of three men attempting to start a fight. The officers witnessed a vehicle with an inoperable third brake light. Contact was made with the driver, Morris, who had blood running from a cut above his left eye was found to have a strong smell of alcohol and was slurring his words. He failed two of the three field sobriety tests and had a BAC of .207. He was cited and released to appear.

• Kirby M. Taylor, 26, of Des Moines, is charged with operating while intoxicated after authorities pulled over the vehicle on Interstate 80 mile marker 164 at 12:02 a.m. Friday. Officers had been informed of a reckless driver on Interstate 80 traveling eastbound. They were unable to locate the vehicle before it passed through city limits. The officers were informed that the vehicle was again traveling on Interstate 80, swerving all over the road as well as going as slow as 30 miles per hour. After apprehending Taylor, he was found to have a strong odor of alcohol and admitted he was intoxicated. He refused all sobriety maneuvers. After being transported to the Newton Police Department, he submitted to a breath test which came back at .152. He was taken to the Jasper County Jail.

Jasper County Sheriff’s Office

• Barbara M. Antle, 66, of Newton, is charged with possessing contraband after authorities were called to the Newton Correctional Facility at 4:22 p.m. Sunday. Antle arrived with her accomplice and while the accomplice entered the prison, Antle was observed sitting inside her vehicle. While in her vehicle, she was caught on security camera throwing contraband onto prison grounds. It was later located and identified as two types of pills and meth. She was taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Brett W. Janes, 35, of Collins, is charged with possession of firearm by a felon after authorities were called to 14206 N. 95th Ave. W. in Collins at 10:08 a.m. Thursday. Janes and his father were involved in a domestic dispute after which his father fled for his safety. Janes stated he would use the shotgun he possessed if anyone was called to the residence. His father requested a no contact order. He was taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Tyler J. Kelchen, 22, of Newton, is charged with operating while intoxicated first offense after authorities pulled over a vehicle at the 6200 Block of Highway F48 West at 2:28 a.m. Saturday. After being stopped for a traffic violation, Kelchen was found to have blood shot and watery eyes as well as a strong smell of alcohol. He admitted to consuming two beers and had a BAC of .097. He was taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Robert C. Sears, 32, of Newton, is charged with driving while license under revocation after authorities pulled over a vehicle at the 5700 Block of Highway 14 South at 12:10 a.m. Sunday. Sears stated he had a driver’s license but was not sure if it was valid. After checking with the Iowa DOT, officers found that it was currently revoked for a previous OWI. He was taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Glenn H. Vanbalen, 43, of  Kellogg, is charged with possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia after authorities stopped a vehicle on Interstate 80 eastbound at mile marker 163.5 at 11:54 p.m. Thursday. After being arrested for numerous traffic violations, officers performed a search of the vehicle and found three pipes, a digital scale and meth rocks. He was taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Darlene M. Vanbalen, 38, of Kellogg, is charged with possessing contraband, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia after authorities stopped a vehicle on Interstate 80 eastbound at mile marker 163.5 at 11:54 p.m. Thursday. Vanbalen was a passenger in the vehicle and was observed having fast speech and uncontrolled body movements. Three pipes, a digital scale and meth were found in the vehicle and she admitted to smoking meth that day. She was taken to the Jasper County Jail.
