Ice, Ice Baby

The ice bucket challenge has reached the political level, at least here in Jasper County. Nancy Parrott, Jasper County Recorder, took on the cold challenge Tuesday morning and in turn, challenged every male elected official in the county — including Iowa Sen. Dennis Black and Iowa Rep. Dan Kelley — to follow suit.

“I am taking the ALS plunge to help make us all more aware of this progressive neurodegenerative disease,” Parrott said. Parrott’s deputies Linda Hammer, Laura Van Der Hart, Denise Allan and Patti Van Zee had the honor of dousing their boss. ALS is more commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, and the ALS Association created the challenge as a way to raise awareness and funds to battle it.
