Luellen brothers win again at Marshalltown

MARSHALLTOWN — In back-to-back feature races Friday night at Marshalltown Speedway, brothers Austin and Clint Luellen captured wins. Austin notched his eighth win of the season at Marshalltown, winning the IMCA Hobby Stocks race. Clint followed with a final-lap move to the lead to win the Big Eight Tyre Center IMCA Norther SportsMods feature.

In the 12-lap IMCA Hobby Stock feature, Austin Luellen battled for the early lead with Mitchell Thomas and Tyson Overton. Luellen got out front on Lap 4 and weathered a few caution flags to win. Eric Stanton ran second followed by Jamie Schirm, Calvin Dhondt and John Watson.

After a caution forced a complete restart in the 18-lap Big Eight Tyre Center IMCA Northern SportMods feature, Ryan Ashton took the lead from the pole position. On Lap 6, Shawn Rittter got around Ashton for the lead. Following a restart on Lap 12, Ritter had Ashton and Clint Luellen on his back bumper. Luellen went to the outside to beat Ritter on the last lap to take the win. Ritter, Jenae Gustin, Adam Shelman and Ashton rounded out the top five.

Josh May used a restart following a caution on Lap 4 to get to the front of the field in the 15-lap Mod Lites feature. May held off all challengers and did not allow several other cautions to keep him out of victory lane. Tim Henningar was second followed by Andy Henningar, DJ Schmalzried and Dusty Masolini.

Damon Murty worked his way up and grabbed the lead away from Dave Atcher on Lap 6 in the IMCA Stock Cars feature race. The only thing slowing Murty was the lap traffic late in the race. Murty won the 18-lap race with Atcher finishing in second. Michael Jaennette, Donavon Smith and Scooter Dulin rounded out the top five.

Racer Hulin won the final feature of the night. With seven laps to go, Hulin went to the front of the field and stayed there to win the 20-lap IMCA Modifieds feature. Jake Strayer placed second and Ronn Lauritzen was third. Adam Larson came across in fourth and Tyler Droste was fifth.

Friday starts a busy two weeks at the Marshalltown Speedway as it will be Johnny Ray’s Sports Bar and Grille Night. Hot laps are at 7 p.m. and races start at 7:30 p.m.

On Aug. 27, the Speedway hosts the United States Modified Touring Series along with the Iron Man Challenge series for USRA Stock Cars and USRA B-Mods.  Aug. 29 will be the North 3rd Ave Dairy Queen Larry Wollam Season Championship.
