State Fair Winners

• Gavin Banderhorst of Prairie City placed fifth in junior individual judging; and first place along with teammates Cole Moeller of West Point, Mitchell Harken of Pleasantville and Shae Lynn Becker of Keota in the Junior team division in the Youth Livestock Judging competition.

• Loupees Bantams of Reasnor took second in the Giant Runt Old Hen class and seventh place in the Giant Runt Old Cock class of the Piegeon contest. Pigeons were judged by the comparison method using the National Pigeon Association Standard, and rare breeds were judged using the European Method.

• Maranda Bissell of Colfax took home the blue ribbon with a toss of 98 feet in the women’s KRNT Cow Chip Throwing contest.

• Randy Clark of Monroe placed third in Class A of the open singles division of the Horseshoe Pitching Tournament and fourth in Class A of in the open doubles division of the Horseshoe Pitching Tournament with Leo Toby of New Boston.

• Sheryl Clark of Colfax placed second in Verse or Motto (over 15 inches) and fourth in picture (over 25 inches, linen or linen technique) in the Counted Cross Stitch division in the Fabric and Threads competition.

• Jim Crandell, Sr. of Newton won the Reserve Champion Texan Pioneer; first place in the Texan Pioneer Old Hen class; all places in the Texan Pioneer Young Cock; all places in the Texan Pioneer Young Hen; and fourth in the Texan Pioneer Old Cock class of the Pigeon contest. Pigeons were judged by the comparison method using the National Pigeon Association Standard, and rare breeds were judged using the European Method.

• Linda Dalton of Newton earned third place in the Senior Spelldown competition. The Senior Spelldown is part of the Fair’s Older Iowans’ Day activities and is open to participants age 60 and over.

• Joe DeSaulniers of Mingo placed sixth in the Piano (17 and older) class of the Accordion, Harmonica and Piano Playing contest.

• Sadie DeSaulniers of Mingo placed fifth in the Piano (17 and older) class of the Accordion, Harmonica and Piano Playing contest.

• Lucas Hewitt of Baxter earned a second place for Beard with Costume class and a third place for Most Historic in the Beard Growing competition.

• Donna Ruth-Hines of Newton earned fifth place in the Wild and Wacky Marvelous Hat contest.

• Jeffrey King of Newton took first place in the Cornmeal Muffins competition; an honorable mention in Muffins (other than fruit) class of the Iowa Bed and Breakfast Quick Breads competition. Entries were judged on general appearance, texture, flavor and aroma.

• Kurt and Becky Konek of Monroe received fourth place in walk-trot pleasure – riders 18 and under in the Open Western Horse Show.

• Don Larkin of Newton earned a second place for Most Unique in the Beard Growing competition.

• Gerald Leffler of Monroe placed first in the Iowa Amateur Championship of the Horseshoe Pitching Tournament and first in Class B in the open singles division of the Horseshoe Pitching Tournament; and placed third with Ron Tangeman, also of Monroe, in Class A of in the open doubles division of the Horseshoe Pitching Tournament

• Barb Miller of Prairie City took second place in the bread class in the Cooking with Sorghum competition; received first place in the Cheese Bread class; second in Cranberry Bread (without Nuts); second in Nut Bread; and an honorable mention in the Cake Mix Bread class of the Iowa Bed and Breakfast Quick Breads competition; and won first place in the Banana Nut Bread class in the Chiquita Ultimate Banana Bread competition; and third place in the Pumpkin (Non Yeast) class of the Make It with Lard competition.

• Olesen Farms of Mingo received nineth place in the Maine Tainer spring yearling heifer, March 1 to April 30, 2013 division in the Maine-Anjou Beef Cattle show.

• Phyllis Olson of Newton won third overall and second place in the Pecan Pie class of the Impossible Recipe contest; third place in Gooseberry class in the Machine Shed Pies competition; and third in Zucchini in the Machine Shed Pies competition.

• Gary L. Osborn of Newton claimed six of the 12 Court of Honor titles in the Rose competition judged Saturday at the 2014 Iowa State Fair. Osborn won honors for Best Floribunda in addition to claiming the Queen and King of Hybrid Tea/Grandiflora and Queen, King and Princess of Miniatures titles. In Section 1, he placed third for any other yellow blend; first in touch of class; second in any other pink blend, first in any other medium red, first in veteran’s honor, first and third in any other red blend, second in paradise; in Section 2, he received first in any red/red blend; in Section 3, he placed second in modern shrubs, first in large flowered climber; in Section 4, he received first place in any red – medium or dark; in Section 5, he placed third in any other white, first in Bee’s Knees, second in any other yellow blend, first in any other orange/orange blend/red/pink, first in any other pink/medium pink/deep pink, first and third in any other pink blend, second in Miss Flippins, first in any other red blend; in Section 6, he won first and second for pink blends; in Section 7, he received second for 5 miniatures – exhibition stage, second in miniature English bench, second in 3 miniatures – cycle of bloom, first in three hybrid teas, and first in English bench.

• Kenny Schlosser of Colfax placed first with his Full Pull for 10-year-old boys in the Pedal Power Pull.

• Ron Tangeman of Monroe earned second place in Class B of the open singles division of the Horseshoe Pitching Tournament; and placed third with Gerald Leffler, also of Monroe, in Class A of in the open doubles division of the Horseshoe Pitching Tournament.

• Dennis Terlouw of Newton placed second in the Most Unusual Vegetable contest.

• Colby Tool of Monroe took second place in the Iowa Amateur Championship of the Horseshoe Pitching Tournament.

• Allie Turnbell of Mingo received fourth place for her pull of 29 feet, 8 inches for 8-year-old girl in the Pedal Power Pull.

• Jake Turnbull of Mingo placed third for his Full Pull of 35 feet, 6 inches for 11-year-old boys in the Pedal Power Pull.

• Deana Wright of Colfax claimed third place in the Yodeling contest.
