Cardinals to honor military personnel at Friday’s baseball game

Newton baseball’s Military Appreciation Night is Friday at Woodland Park’s Eversman Field. The Cardinal varsity game against Saydel begins at 7:30 p.m.

Free admission to the game for any active or retired military personnel. Military members will be asked to join the Cardinal varsity team on the field during the singing of the National Anthem.

Newton’s mascot “Big Red” will be on hand to help hand out miniature American flags to fans. Newton’s players will wear special camouflage baseball caps with the Newton N logo on them for the game.

The NHS junior varsity plays at 5:30 p.m.

The Cardinals (11-17) finish Little Hawkeye Conference play Thursday in a doubleheader at Grinnell. Newton is 9-10 in conference action.

Newton ends the season with three home games starting with Friday’s contest against Saydel. The Cardinals are at home next week against South Tama on Tuesday and Boone on Wednesday.

The Cardinals open Iowa Class 4A Substate 7 action July 18. They play Ankeny Centennial in a first-round game at 7 p.m. at Northview Middle School in Ankeny.

Other first-round games in the substate tournament are Des Moines North at Urbandale and Des Moines Roosevelt at Johnston.
