CMB splits games at West Marshall Classic

STATE CENTER — Collins-Maxwell/Baxter earned its fourth win of the season on June 21, giving the Raiders more wins than they’ve had the last three seasons combined.

CMB (4-10) went 1-1 at the one-day tournament. The Raiders defeated Grundy Center, 5-3, and lost to West Marshall, 7-5.

A three-run first inning gave CMB a lead it never lost against Grundy Center. The Raiders hit four doubles, the most extra-base hits the team has had in one game this year. Hunter McWhirter and Aric Broderirck both had two hits and two RBIs.

Junior Seth Balke threw his third complete game this season. The right-hander (2-2) allowed nine hits and struck out four.

CMB couldn’t quite come back from a five-run, seventh-inning deficit in its loss to West Marshall. The Raiders scored three in the final inning to cut into West Marshall’s 7-2 advantage.

The Trojans (10-10) led throughout as they scored three runs in the first off CMB starter Nate Bishop. West Marshall had eight hits off Bishop (0-2), who threw all seven innings in defeat.

Brady Stover went 2-for-4 with a double and a triple and two RBIs against West Marshall.

PCM drops two of three

West Marshall scored 14 runs in the first inning and led 16-4 after two.

Junior Tyler Townsend took the loss on the mound for PCM as he gave up six hits and 10 runs in the first inning without recording an out.
