Brian Wilson (left) of Monroe raised an award-winning steer in the Iowa Cattlmen’s Association Carcass Challenge contest. ICA President Ed Greiman (right) of Garner awarded Wilson a jacket, hat and $250 cash prize for the placing in the Carcass Merit category. Three county cattlemen’s associations — Jasper, Monroe and Warren — sponsored the steer in the contest. There were 68 steers in the contest, and they were rated for Carcass Merit based on the value of quality and yield grades, which are two measures of importance for consumers. The Carcass Merit calculation valued Wilson’s steer at $241.97 per cwt.
