Newton Police Department
• Nicole M. Anderson, 29, of Grinnell was charged with fifth-degree theft after authorities responded to a theft report at 9:24 a.m. May 30 at Walmart. She was charged for allegedly attempting to steal several items with a total value of $44.34 and was released to appear in court.
• Curtis L. Carty, 43, of Newton was cited with failure to maintain control following a single-vehicle accident at 4:35 p.m. May 31 in the 2600 block South 12th Avenue West. Carty stated he had swerved to avoid hitting a deer, causing him to lose control of the vehicle, which rolled several times. He also said the vehicle was owned by 68-year-old Larry Lust and had been lent to a passenger in the vehicle, Sheila Carty. The vehicle sustained an estimated $5,000 damage.
• Corey A. Dejoode, 23, of Colfax was charged with driving while license suspended and cited for no insurance after authorities stopped him at 2:29 a.m. May 30 in the 300 block of East 12th Street North for having an inoperable brake light. He was given a warning for the brake light and released to appear in court.
• Adam W. Eklund, 23, of Des Moines was charged with operating while intoxicated after authorities received a complaint of a possibly intoxicated driver and located the suspect vehicle at 1:37 a.m. May 31 in the Perkins parking lot. Eklund failed sobriety tests and had a BAC of .094. He was released to appear in court.
• Paige M. Gathercole, 18, of Colfax was charged with fifth-degree theft after authorities responded to a theft complaint at 4:12 p.m. May 26 at Walmart. She was charged for allegedly stealing three items with a total value of $11.75 and was released to appear in court.
• James A.P. Freerks III, 21, of Newton was charged with possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and serious domestic assault after authorities responded to a report of a possible domestic assault in progress at 10 p.m. May 30 at a residence in the 600 block of East Second Street. He was charged for allegedly assaulting a female and being in possession of one gram of marijuana and a glass marijuana pipe. He was transported to the Jasper County Jail.
• Tanner B. Jensen, 23, of Newton was charged with possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia after authorities were dispatched at 4:05 p.m. May 30 to 600 E. Fourth St. N. in reference to a wanted person. Jensen was wanted on four Jasper County warrants for failure to appear in court. During his arrest, authorities searched him and found a small baggie identified as methamphetamine and a glass pipe. He was transported to the Jasper County Jail.
• Ian D. McCandless, 21, of Newton was arrested on a Jasper County warrant for failure to appear in court after authorities located him at 12:49 p.m. Thursday at 800 S. Second Ave. W. He was transported to the Jasper County Jail.
• Lisa L. McConnell, 32, of Newton was charged with driving while license suspended after authorities stopped her at 10:11 p.m. Wednesday in the 1200 block of North Fourth Avenue East. She was transported to the Jasper County Jail.
• Brandon S. Pollock, 28, of Newton and Amanda S. West, 31, of Newton were charged with simple domestic assault after authorities responded to a domestic assault report at 3:42 p.m. June 1 at 703 W. Fourth St. S. Pollock and West were charged for allegedly assaulting each other and transported to the Jasper County Jail.
• Dorothy J. Romans, 68, of Newton was cited with failure to maintain control following a two-vehicle accident at 3:19 p.m. May 31 on South Eighth Avenue West. Romans was traveling east and struck the rear of a vehicle ahead of her driven by McKayla K. Schwabe, 17, of Newton. Schwabe was transported to Skiff Medical Center for an evaluation. Her vehicle sustained an estimated $1,500 damage and Romans’ an estimated $3,000 damage.
• Anthony L. Saltzman, 29, of Newton was charged with interference with official acts and driving while license suspended and cited with no-insurance accident related after authorities responded to a report of a collision at 3:52 p.m. May 28 in the Walmart parking lot, where Saltzman had backed out of a parking space and collided with a vehicle driven by owned by 76-year-old Harry L. Farr of Newton. Upon arrival, officers were told vehicle responsible for the accident was in the Arby’s parking lot and that a tall man had been driving. When authorities located the vehicle, the owner of the vehicle — Natasha L. Cannon, 23, of Newton — was driving and stated she had been driving at the time of the accident. Authorities obtained video footage from Walmart security cameras and determined Saltzman had been the one driving at the time of the accident. He was charged and released to appear in court. Cannon was charged with providing false information and also was cited with no-insurance accident related. Her vehicle sustained an estimated $600 damage and Farr’s an estimated $400 damage.
• Chad E. Veach, 33, of Newton was arrested on Jasper County warrants for failure to appear in court on drug charges and for possession of marijuana after authorities located him at 8:23 p.m. Thursday at 800 S. Second Ave. W. He was transported to the Jasper County Jail.
A criminal charge is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty. It is the policy of the Newton Daily News to release the names of individuals charged with a crime who are 16 and older.
