Warriors sweep Cardinal boys

NORWALK — Not much went Newton’s way Thursday. The Cardinal boys did notch some set wins in their Little Hawkeye Conference tennis dual with Norwalk’s Warriors, but lost 11-0 in matches.

In singles matches, Jon Vitek lost 6-1, 6-4 to Austin Lavelle in the No. 1 spot then Ben Van Dalen dropped a 6-1, 6-1 decision to Austin Grant in the No. 2 match. Newton’s No. 3 singles player, Brian Jones, lost 6-3, 6-0 to David Duffy.

Alex Cron lost 6-0, 6-1 to Norwalk’s Grant Wright in the No. 4 singles match. Nowalk’s Jacob Newman defeated Newton’s Chas Antle, 6-1, 6-2, in No. 5 singles. Newton’s Liam Briggs pushed Jackson Wright at No. 6 singles, but lost 6-2, 6-3.

Duffy and Jackson Wright combined to defeat Newton’s Vitek and Van Dalen at No. 1 doubles, 6-1, 6-2. Newton’s Jones and Antle fell 6-3, 6-3 to Neil Hanson and Chris Higgins at No. 2 doubles.

In the No. 3 doubles match, Newton’s Briggs and Joe Stammeyer came up short, losing 6-2, 6-4 to Noah Daniels and Trey Sievers. Norwalk’s Justin Pappan and Zach Cook beat Newton’s No. 4 doubles team of Cron and Jarred Griffin, 6-1, 6-1. Newton’s Austin Van Brogen and Sean Richardson lost 6-2, 6-0 to Zach Samson and Erik Webb at No. 5 doubles.

The Cardinals are at Oskaloosa in conference action today in a rescheduled contest from April 24.
