Cardinal track teams head to LHC meet Monday

NEWTON — Newton’s Cardinal track teams are ready for the 2014 Little Hawkeye Conference track meet Monday at Pella Community High School.

Both NHS head coaches — Rachel Tomas for the girls and Tom Bartello for the boys — agree the LHC meet is tough.

“The conference meet is always an exciting meet to compete in.  Our biggest challenge is going to be our numbers.  We have a small squad this year, which makes it difficult to score a lot of points in a meet.  We have a strong core, but when we are competing against full teams, it’s hard to put up as many points as they do,” Bartello said.

“Our season training has been building to this meet and state qualifying. Our conference is tough, and everybody is close in the team standings. We never really know how it will all shake out for final team standings,” Tomas said.

Watch for Newton’s Deonne Harris in the 110-meter hurdles, Michaela Bleeker and Sarah Kalkhoff in the throwing events, Jarom Williams in long jump, Grace Coen, Jacob Thomas and Christian Laube in the distance races.
