Newton girls place fourth at DCHS meet

WEST DES MOINES — Staying sharp for the week’s Drake Relays, those Newton girls qualified for the competition had a strong showing for the Cardinals Monday at the Dowling Catholic High School Girls Invitational.

The Cardinals piled up 91 points for fourth place. West Des Moines Dowling Catholic won its meet with 134 points followed by Urbandale with 113 points and Des Moines-Roosevelt with 100 points. There were eight teams in the meet.

Grace Coen, who is qualified in all three distance races at the Drake Relays, won the 1,500-meter race in 5 minutes, 2.25 seconds. Coen also anchored the NHS gold-medal winning distance medley relay. Joining her were Amber Karsten, Leela Spencer and Hailey Coy for a winning time of 4:23.30.

Sydney Jenkins claimed first place in the 400-meter dash in 1:01.75. Jenkins, Kacy Cazett, Karsten and Spencer placed second in the 4x100-meter relay race in 53.28 seconds. The foursome will run at the Drake Relays.

Cazett, Emma Meyer, Molly Davros and Bridget Carson finished sixth in the 4x200-meter relay race in 2:04.6. Cazett will run at the Drake Relays in the event with Jenkins, Spencer, Karsten and Alex Hutchinson.

Sarah Kalkhoff, who finished sixth in the Drake Relays’ high school discus a year ago, is  going back this season. She collected another gold medal in the discus at the DCHS meet with a throw of 120 feet, 1 inch.

Michaela Bleeker won the shot put event with a throw of 38’5” and she was fourth in the discus at 101’4 1/2”.  Bleeker is qualified for the Drake Relays in the shot put. Kalkhoff won Monday’s junior varsity shot put competition with a toss of 34’7 1/2”.

Newton’s 4x400-meter relay team of Karsten, Coy, Anna Barr and Jenkins was second in 4:22.57. Cazett, Bailey Zaruba, Spencer and Taylor Fisher combined for fourth place in the 800-meter sprint medley in 2:04.34.

Spencer ran third in the 200-meter dash in 28.03 seconds. Zaruba placed fifth in the 100-meter hurdles in 17.56 seconds and Barr was fifth in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:14.04. Zaruba, Taylor Graff, Barr and Fran Lucas teamed up for third place in the 4x100-meter shuttle hurdle relay race in 1:13.66.

Besides Kalkhoff’s win in the junior varsity division, Madison Bagnall claimed first in the discus with a throw of 89’1”; Lucas was fifth in the 100-meter hurdles in 19.26 seconds and the sprint medley relay team of Meyer, Davros, Carson and Brooke Henning was fifth in 2:19.46.

The next meet for the Cardinal girls is the Grinnell Invitational next Monday, April 29.
