McNeer charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection with Petro death

Matthew A. McNeer, 29, of Newton has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection with the death of Steven Petro after an autopsy report indicated Petro had a high level of methamphetamine in his system when he suffered from a circulatory collapse.

Newton police responded to a report of an unresponsive male, identified as Petro, at 3:55 a.m. Feb. 5 at 213 W. Third St. S. in Newton. During an investigation, authorities determined McNeer allegedly provided meth to Petro shortly before his body was found, according to a news release from the Newton Police Department.

Petro was treated at a Des Moines area hospital but died the day after he was found. Police concluded the investigation Wednesday, and McNeer was charged with involuntary manslaughter and possession of less than five grams of meth with intent to deliver.
