Gov. Terry Branstad made an appearance Saturday afternoon in Newton, when he attended the Jasper County Republicans’ E.K. Shaw Memorial Trap Shoot at the Jasper County Gun Club.

“It was a beautiful day, I didn’t do as well as I’d like to, but it was a lot of fun,” Branstad said. “I hadn’t done this for awhile, but it gives me some good practice for bird hunting.”

Branstad was in Newton for a Jasper County town hall meeting on April 2, where he also signed Senate File 2341 — the sales tax rebate bill for Iowa Speedway — and said he makes it a point to visit all 99 of Iowa’s counties a year.

A number of other candidates were also in attendance for the shoot, including U.S. Senate Candidate Marc Jacobs, Iowa’s Second Congressional District Candidate Dr. Mariannette Miller-Meeks and Iowa Senate District 15 Candidate Jeremy Filbert as well as several candidates seeking elected positions for Jasper County offices.

Jasper County Republican Chairman Marshall Crtichfield, who is also running for county recorder, commented that the trap shoot was a success when he introduced Branstad. He also declared the shoot will become an annual event, which the governor showed support for.

“Absolutely, I hope to come back. I would love to be here next year,” Branstad said.
