Prep postseasons around the corner

There aren’t many more regular-season outings for area high school winter sports teams. Boys’ swimming and wrestling postseason begins in a week.

Newton hosts a Class 1A bowling regional and a Class 3A district wrestling tournament this year. Both are in two weeks.

Also beginning in two weeks are the girls’ regional basketball tournaments. Regional assignments and pairings for the girls were released earlier this week.

On Feb. 8, Newton Cardinal swimmers head to Southeast Polk for a district swim meet. Also in that district are Ankeny, Des Moines Roosevelt, Indianola, Lewis Central, Oskaloosa, West Des Moines Valley and Southeast Polk. District qualifiers advance to the 2014 state swim meet Feb. 15 at Marshalltown.

Four area wrestling teams open up sectional competition Feb. 8. Collins-Maxwell/Baxter, Lynnville-Sully and Colfax-Mingo join Belle Plaine, H-L-V, Iowa Valley, West Marshall and B-G-M in the Class 1A, Sectional 3 at Brooklyn. The top two wrestlers in each weight class advance to the Class 1A district tournament at Pleasantville Feb. 15.

Prairie City-Monroe is in the Class 2A Sectional 14 at Albia Feb. 8. Also in that sectional tournament are host Albia, Centerville, Chariton, Davis County and Knoxville. The top two wrestlers in each weight class advance to the Class 2A district tournament at Fairfield Feb. 15.

Newton hosts the Class 3A District 7 wrestling tournament Feb. 15. Action begins at noon. Joining Newton in the tournament are Iowa City City High, Iowa City West, Marshalltown, Oskaloosa, Ottumwa, Pella and Cedar Rapids Prairie.

The top two wrestlers in each weight class from districts advance to the Iowa High School State Wrestling Tournament, Feb. 20-22 at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

The Iowa high school duals regionals for Class 1A and 2A are Feb. 11 and Class 3A on Feb. 12. The state duals tournament is Feb. 19 at Wells Fargo Arena.

Bowling regionals are Feb. 18. Newton’s boys and girls bowling teams host a Class 1A regional at Cardinal Lanes. Competition begins at 11 a.m. Also in the regional are Pella Christian, Oskaloosa, Norwalk, Knoxville, Des Moines Hoover and Clarke of Osceola. Qualifiers advance to the state tournament Feb. 24 in Des Moines.

Girls’ basketball regionals begin Feb. 13 with Class 1A followed by Class 2A and  3A on Feb. 15 and Class 4A on Feb. 19. The 2014 IGHSAU state basketball tournament is March 3-8 at Wells Fargo Arena.

Lynnville-Sully earned a first-round bye in Class 1A Region 5, where the championship game will be held at Pella Christian on Feb. 24. Lynnville-Sully hosts the winner of Melcher-Dallas and Tri-County, which play Feb. 13, in a second-round game Feb. 18. Lynnville-Sully also hosts a quarterfinal round contest Feb. 21.

Other teams in Class 1A Region 5 are Moravia, Seymour, Wayne of Corydon, Morman Trail, Twin Cedars, H-L-V, North Mahaska, Moulton-Udell, Belle Plaine and Montezuma. English Valleys is on the other side of the bracket and earned a first-round bye, plus hosts second-round and quarterfinal games.

Collins-Maxwell/Baxter, Colfax-Mingo and Pella Christian are in Class 2A Region 6. Also in the regional are South Hamilton, Madrid, Ogden, Woodward-Granger and Pleasantville. Receiving first-round byes are Fort Dodge St. Edmond, West Marshall, Des Moines Christian and Van Meter.

Opening-round games are Feb. 15. CMB hosts Ogden with the winner taking on West Marshall in the second round in the top of the bracket. In the other side of the bracket, Pella Christian hosts Colfax-Mingo with the winner facing Van Meter. The two local games are at 7 p.m.

Prairie City-Monroe is in Class 3A Region 8 along with Nevada, Greene County, Kuemper Catholic, Gilbert, Bondurant-Farrar, West Central Valley and Adel-DeSoto-Minburn. PCM hosts A-D-M at 7 p.m. Feb. 15 with the winner meeting the winner of the Bondurant-Farrar and West Central Valley contest on Feb. 19 at Bondurant-Farrar. The championship game is Feb. 22 at Ankeny.

Newton was assigned to Class 4A Region 5 along with Pella, Ballard, Washington, Fairfield and Grinnell. Newton hosts the championship game Feb. 25.

Newton travels to Pella on Feb. 19 in the opening round for a 7 p.m. game. The winner plays at Ballard Feb. 22. On the other side of the bracket, Washington hosts Fairfield on Feb. 19 with the winner going to Grinnell on Feb. 22.

Regional winners advance to the state tournament.

For boys’ basketball, district tournament games for Class 1A and 2A begin Feb. 17. Class 3A district action starts Feb. 24 as does Class 4A substate play. District and substate assignments for the boys have been made but pairings have not.

Lynnville-Sully is in Class 1A District 11 along with Ankeny Christian Academy, Colo-NESCO, Grandview Park Baptist, Iowa Christian Academy, Madrid, Martensdale-St. Marys, Pleasantville, Southeast Warren and Woodward-Granger.

In Class 2A, Colfax-Mingo and Collins-Maxwell/Baxter joins East Marshall, North Polk, South Hardin and West Marshall in District 13. Prairie City-Monroe and Pella Christian are in District 12 with Albia, Cardinal of Eldon, Davis County and Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont.

Newton is in Class 4A Substate 6. Also in the tournament are Iowa City City High, Iowa City West, Marshalltown, Ottumwa and Cedar Rapids Prairie.

In Class 1A, 2A and 3A, district champions advance to play for substate championship and a spot in the IHSAA state tournaments. Class 4A substate champions qualify for the state tournament. The IHSAA state tournament is March 10-15 at Wells Fargo Arena.
