CMB boys break out; girls freeze up

GILBERT — Close games have become a standard for Collins-Maxwell/Baxter’s boys this season. They were in another one Friday against Gilbert’s Tigers.

The Raiders were leading 49-47 going into the fourth quarter then something happened.  They had a power surge of 20 points while holding the Tigers to eight, recording their 10th win of the season, 69-55.

In the girls’ contest Friday, the CMB Raiders weren’t able to take care of the basketball early nor could they buy a basket. The Tigers pounced on the Raiders’ troubles, netting a 50-38 win.

CMB’s boys improved to 10-3 overall and 7-3 in Heart of Iowa play. CMB’s girls dropped to 4-11 overall and 2-9 in conference action. The Raider teams host Nevada in HOI play in Baxter.

The Raider boys trailed by two after one quarter, but turned the tables to outscore the Tigers 23-16 for a 35-30 halftime advantage. It was back-and-forth in the third quarter with CMB holding a two-point lead until the final run.

CMB shot 48 percent, 24-of-49, from the field to Gilbert’s 35 percent, 21-of-60. The Tigers netted 10 3-pointers in the game led by Ryan Blum, who hit four for his 12 points.

A big factor in the outcome was free throw shooting. The Raiders sank 15-of-21 attempts from the line while the Tigers were 4-of-12.

Zach Samson corralled 21 rebounds and scored 11 points for the Raiders. Bryce Kemp topped the scoring for CMB with 15 points followed by Seth Balke with 14 and Austin Moorman with 11. Kemp had 11 rebounds and three steals and Balke handed out four assists.

Dax Hatfield scored 12 points for Gilbert.

IN THE GIRLS' game, the Raiders went over 14 minutes with just one field goal in the first half. They were down 16-7 after one quarter and trailed 33-11 at halftime.

Lexi Breon led the Raider girls with 20 points. Breon, who is second in Class 2A in assists, had six in the game. Class 2A’s rebound leader is CMB’s Abbie Haupert with 180. She had a double-double Friday with 10 rebounds and 15 points. Haupert is eighth on the 2A scoring list.

Katie Ziesman had two steals and two assists. Bridget Hurley made three steals. Haupert blocked three shots.

Gilbert was led by Madison Blum with 11 points and Hillary Mosiman with 10.
