Cardinal teams fall against Little Dutch

Lynnville-Sully’s squads win; CMB, PCM splits games; Colfax-Mingo, Pella Christian lose

Newton’s girls and boys found the road a tough place, losing to Pella Friday night in Little Hawkeye Conference play. Lynnville-Sully’s boys pull an upset and the girls win at home. On the road, CMB boys win and the girls lose, Colfax-Mingo’s teams remain winless and PCM’s boys lose for the first time this season and the PCM girls win. Pella Christian loses at home.

Pella girls 56, Newton girls 47

PELLA — A slow start hampered Newton’s girls Friday night against host Pella Community’s Little Dutch. Pella got the lead early, 15-6, and maintained it. The Cardinals dropped a nine-point decision, 56-47.

The Cardinals complete the first round of Little Hawkeye Conference games with a 3-4 mark. They are 3-10 overall and have a non-conference game at Boone Tuesday.

Pella pushed out to a 46-32 lead following three quarters. Newton shaved the deficit down with a 15-10 run in the final eight minutes.

Hannah Rhoads led the Cardinals with 14 points. Michaela Jacobsen added 11 points and Sydney Jenkins scored 10 points.

Pella 74, Newton boys 59

PELLA — Newton's boys came out cold from the field, and although the Cardinals kept it tight, they ultimately fell on the road to Pella, 74-59.

The Little Dutch took an early lead after knocking down six 3-pointers in the first half, but Newton hung in there, trailing 33-24 at the halftime break. Newton closed the gap, scoring seven straight to pull within a bucket. After a Pella timeout, the Cards came up short on its next three possessions, and Pella caught back up to its first-half pace, taking a 51-37 lead into the final quarter.

Pella had its biggest scoring outburst of the night with 23 points in the fourth quarter to close out the win for the Little Dutch.

Newton had difficulty containing senior Bryce Bortscheller, who scored 20 of the Little Dutch points.

Leading the Cards in scoring were Tyler Wood and Chandler Sturtz with nine points. Nick Easley added seven points, and Connor Gholson had six.

Lynnville-Sully girls, boys win at home

SULLY — Two eighth-ranked teams in Class 1A took the floor at Sully Friday night. One won, one didn’t.

After Lynnville-Sully’s girls got back on the winning track with a 39-27 win over Keota, the Hawk boys upended the previously undefeated Keota Eagles, 45-33. The Hawk girls improved to 12-2 overall and the Hawk boys are 9-3.

The Hawk boys held the Eagles (11-1) to nine first-half points. Lynnville-Sully was up 26-18 at the end of three quarters.

The trio of T.J. Cunningham (14 points), Kyle VanDyke (12) and Darin Hofer (11) led the Hawks. Keota got 13 points from Kolton Greiner and 12 from Nate Owen.

The Lynnville-Sully girls used a 12-0 start to propel them to their victory. They led the Eagle girls 21-8 at halftime.

Cassie Cullen poured n 13 points and Lysandra James had 10 points. Becca Vos handed out four assists and made four steals for the Hawks. Kelsi Sieren led Keota with 12 points.

Pella Christian loses doubleheader

PELLA — Home was not so sweet for Pella Christian’s basketball teams Friday night.

The Eagle girls lost 56-46 to Grinnell and the boys dropped a 68-49 decision to the Tigers. Pella Christian’s teams are both 6-7 for the season.

CMB boys win, girls lose

GILBERT — Collins-Maxwell/Baxter’s boys pulled away for good from their host Gilbert Friday night on a 20-8 surge in the fourth quarter. The Raiders posted their 10th win of the season, 69-55, over the Tigers.

Zach Samson corralled 21 rebounds and scored 11 points for the Raiders. Bryce Kemp topped the scoring for CMB with 15 points followed by Seth Balke with 14 and Austin Moorman with 11.

The Raider girls’ offense went into a deep freeze, losing 50-38 to Gilbert. Lexi Breon led CMB with 20 points. Abbie Haupert added 15.

Tigerhawks swept at Nevada

NEVADA — Colfax-Mingo's basketball teams continue to struggle midway through the 2013-14 campaign. Both were searching for their first wins heading into Friday at Nevada, and both teams are still looking following big defeats to the Cub teams.

The Tigerhawk boys saw Nevada drill some early 3-pointers and jump out to a double-digit lead after one quarter. C-M could never recover and fell to the Cubs, 61-27.

C-M's girls had similar trouble. The Lady Tigerhawks were unable to find a rhythm on offense agianst their Cub counterparts. Nevada won each of the four quarters handily, with the Tigerhawks never scoring in double figures during any of the four periods. C-M took a 64-14 loss on the road.

PCM teams split at Greene County

JEFFERSON — Prairie City-Monroe's girls took down Greene County's Rams on Friday night, moving to 8-5 on the season with the victory.

PCM's boys were handed their first loss of the season due to some unlucky shooting on their part and the exact opposite from the Rams.

In the 83-65 loss for the Mustangs, PCM hit just 2-of-20 from long range and 26-of-71 overall, while the Rams hit 20-of-35 and 13-of-26 from long distance.

PCM's Logan Gilman led all scorers with 27 points.
