Hazel Ruth (Hicks) Meyer

Hazel Ruth (Hicks) Meyer, 81, of rural Newton died Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2013. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 28, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory in Newton. The family will greet friends from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Memorials to Skiff Hospice may be left at the funeral home.

Hazel, the daughter of Freemont and Sylvia (Davis) Hicks, was born Sept. 28, 1932 in Livonia, Mo. She graduated from Livonia High School. After she graduated, Hazel moved to Newton. On April 30, 1954, Hazel was united in marriage with Carroll L. “Snowball” Meyer in rural Newton. She loved the farm life and was a dedicated farmer’s wife and homemaker. Hazel was a member of the Red Hat Society. She enjoyed traveling with her daughters and had recently gone on a trip to Niagara Falls for her 80th birthday. She especially enjoyed a weeklong trip to Alaska. Hazel also loved spending time with her family.

Those left to honor Hazel’s memory are her children, Larry Meyer of Newton, Danny (Alicia) Meyer of Newton, Kim (Kevin) Barnes of Loveland, Colo., and Judy (John) Gilchrist of Cedar Grove, Wis.; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; her sister, Beulah McKeever of Newton; brother, Charles “Bill” (Arlene) Hicks of Newton; and her many, many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Carroll L. “Snowball” Meyer in 2000; daughter-in-law, Ronda Meyer; son-in-law, Michael Oross; and three brothers, Vearl “Buck” Hicks, Avil Russell Hicks and Elgie Arvil Hicks.
