Newton Police Department

• Two Newton 15-year-old males were charged with fifth-degree theft after officers were dispatched at 4:45 p.m. Aug. 31 to Walmart. They attempted to steal $24.40 in value of items.

• Christopher D. Middleton, 30, of Newton was charged with fifth-degree theft after officers were dispatched at 1 p.m. Tuesday to Walmart on a report of a theft. Middleton attempted to steal two shirts, a hoodie and two lice kits for a total of $112.83. He was placed in jail.

• Megan A. Young, 30, of Knoxville was charged with public intoxication after officers were dispatched at 11:20 p.m. Monday to the 300 block of East 17th Street South on a report of a female lying on the sidewalk. Upon arrival, officers found her lying on the ground with an aerosol duster in her hand. The officers attempted to ask her questions and her mumbles were inaudible. She then inhaled the duster twice in front of the officers. Young had two previous convictions of public intoxication. She was placed in jail.

Jasper County Sheriff’s Office

• Amanda R. McConnell, 33, of Newton was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia after deputies were dispatched at 9:40 p.m. Monday to the 171.5 mile marker on I-80 to assist a motorist with a blown-out tire. While assisting McConnell, the deputy saw a white container and asked what was in it, and McConnell said it contained aspirin. The container smelled of marijuana. McConnell also handed the deputy a glass smoking pipe. She was taken to jail.
