Cardinals get the job done at home

Colfax-Mingo, CMB and PCM win big; Lynnville-Sully drops one at home

Week 2, Sept.6, roundup of area high school football games.  Read more on the games in Monday's Newton Daily News.

Newton 42, Knoxville 28

Newton — Down 28-14, Newton's Cardinals scored 21 unanswered points to deck the visiting Knoxville's Panthers, 42-28,  Friday night at H.A. Lynn Stadium.

The Cardinals saw Knoxville's "do-everything" junior running back Tanner Dunkin returning the second-half kickoff 85 yards. It put Knoxville up by two scores.

Daquan Allen intercepted a Panther pass to set up a Newton touchdown with 8:18 left in the third quarter. Then Newton's defense held again forcing a punt. This time Dunkin, who is the Panther punter, went down on the play with what was believed to be severe heat cramps. Dunkin never returned to the game.

The Cardinals scored the tying TD with 10:06 remaining in the game, when quarterback Tyler Wood connected with Nick Easley on a four-yard scoring strike. Grant Davidson kicked the extra point to make it 28-28.

Knoxville never challenged again. The Panthers did pin the Cardinals back at their own 15 at the 7:01 mark. Newton marched 85 yards for the go-ahead touchdown, a Deonne Harris two-yard run.

"Every team needs to have one of those drives — taking it almost the length of the field with the game on the line — to realize how good it can be and to believe in itself," said Cardinal head coach Ed Ergenbright. "We executed well on that drive and I'm very proud of our guys for coming back the way they did tonight."

Newton's defense sealed the deal when Mike McCormick tipped a Panther pass and teammate Levi Michener made a shoestring catch. Michener weaved his way back down the field on the return to the Knoxville two. Harris pushed in from there for the final margin.

Newton is 1-1 on the season. The Cardinals open Class 3A district play at home next Friday when Boone comes to Newton.

Colfax-Mingo 50, Southeast Warren 14

Colfax-Mingo's Tigerhawks put up yet another big first half of scoring on Friday night, crossing the goal line five times in the first half en route to their 50-14 win at their homecoming game.

Sophomore quarterback Jared Myers ran and threw for scored on the night, the most notable of which came on a 75-yard touchdown pass to Blake Summy. Summy caught a screen pass on the right side of the field and proceeded to streak down the sideline for the score.

The Tigerhawks added 15 points in the second half, putting up a touchdown in both the third and fourth quarters. The second team offense got some reps in the fourth with sophomore Gabe Simpson scoring the touchdown on a handoff up the middle.

Collins-Maxwell/Baxter 42, Roland-Story 7

The Raiders of Collins-Maxwell/Baxter may have found the offensive rhythm from last season that escaped them in the team's opener against Gilbert.

CMB went into Story City with a mission, and it's fair to say that with a final score of 42-7, the Raiders accomplished that mission. The win for the Raiders avenges a loss that the Raiders suffered at the hands of the Norsemen last season, when R-S came away with a 35-28 victory, their only victory of 2012.

CMB returns home next Friday to take on Bondurant-Farrar in a matchup of Class 2A District 6 schools.

Prairie City-Monroe 40, Pella Christian 3

In a rematch of last year's Pella Christian blowout of the Prairie City-Monroe Mustangs, the roles were reversed. Plenty of players from the 2012 team still felt the sting of a 44-6 loss at the hands of the Eagles last season, anf they returned the favor on Friday in Monroe.

The Mustangs led 33-0 at halftime and rolled over the visting Eagles on the back of Zach Uhlenhopp, whose dominating performance allowed the Mustangs to coast to victory. Uhlenhopp dropped the first pass thrown his direction on the night. Had he caught it, he would've had a 30-yard TD reception in the right corner of the west end zone. He caught the next six passes thrown his way — including three thrown his way on defense. In the first half alone, he had three catches for 95 yards, three carries for 32 yards, two TDs and three interceptions on defense.

Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont 20, Lynnville-Sully 8

SULLY — Lynnville-Sully's Hawks dropped to 0-2 on the season with a home loss to the EBF Rockets Friday night. No details on the game were available late Friday night. The Hawks host Pekin next Friday.
