Food for Fines, movies, card games at Newton library

Food for Fines at the

Newton Public Library

From 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 9, through 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, the library will be accepting non-perishable food items in exchange for overdue fines assessed against library materials. Each food item donated to the library will be given to the Jasper Community Food Pantry. One food item will equal up to $1 in fines. Two food items equal $2, and so on.

Some acceptable non-perishable food items include: rice, dried cereal, beans, soups, canned meats, canned juices, peanut butter and any canned fruits or vegetables. This program does not affect charges assessed for lost or damaged materials. You don’t have to have a fine to donate. So, dig into your cupboard to help those in need!

Coffee & Movie:

‘Remember the Titans’

To celebrate the return of football, we will be showing “Remember the Titans” on at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11, in the library meeting room. We will have football-themed snacks along with hot coffee.

Card Game Night

Card Game Night will be at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 16. Learn a new game, play games with a friend, or meet new friends and challenge them. Snacks will be provided.

There will be no gambling during Card Game Nights.

Chick Flick & Lit.

Chick Flick & Lit. presents “Oz: The Great & Powerful” at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19. Snacks will be provided. Synopsis: When Oscar Diggs, a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled from Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks that fame and fortune are his for the taking, that is until he meets three witches, Theodora, Evanora and Glinda, who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone has been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the enormous problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity, and even a bit of wizardry, Oscar transforms himself not only into the great and powerful Wizard of Oz but into a better man as well.
