Mildred Irene ‘Millie’ Lyon

Mildred Irene “Millie” Lyon, 91, of Mesa, Ariz., died July 22, 2013, at Mi Casa Nursing Center in Mesa, Ariz.

Mildred, the daughter of Henry Clyde Wickett and Gladys Irene (Trotter/Toole) Wickett, was born July 19, 1922, in Des Moines and raised in nearby New Virginia. She graduated from New Virginia High School and enjoyed the status as a scholar, renowned basketball and softball player.

Mildred married the love of her life, Don Dean Lyon, Sept. 28, 1939. The couple lived in Des Moines. Mildred was employed most notably by the Des Moines College of Osteopathic Medicine as a secretary to the doctors in the pathology department, retiring in 1993, and moved to Tempe, Ariz. to join her son and family.

She especially enjoyed music and playing the organ and piano, entertaining and instructing on both instruments. Her passion for collecting unusual jewelry was one of her life long hobbies.

She is survived by brothers Robert Eugene and David Paul Wickett; and sisters Evelyn Louise Wickett-Hubler and Geraldine Wickett-Brown, all of Newton; son Stephen Craig Lyon; and three grandchildren.

Mildred was preceded in death by her husband, Don Dean Lyon; his parents, brothers and sister; her brothers, Benjamin Franklin, Lloyd Dean, Kermit William, Henry Clyde Wickett II; and granddaughter Ashley Jeanne Lyon.

She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sibling, aunt and friend that will be missed greatly.

Memorial services were held graveside at Mesa City Cemetery at 1212 N. Center Street.
