Young drivers capture first wins at Marshalltown

MARSHALLTOWN — From the drop of the first green flag to the final feature race every fan in attendance last Friday at Marshalltown Speedway definitely got their money worth. There was great three-four and sometimes five-wide racing by the drivers.

Sam Wieben and Tyler Droste, both younger drivers, posted their first wins of the season at MoTown. Wieben’s came in the Big 8 Tyre Center IMCA sport mods, taking the4 lead on Lap 2 and keeping it through several caution and restarts. Droste used a caution restart to claim the lead in the Meskwaki Bingo Casino Hotel IMCA modifieds and never game it up.

Wieben held off challenges by Neil Follett and Jared Van Deest in the middle of the IMCA sport mods. At the end, Shawn Albers came across in the runner-up spot followed by Van Deest. Ben Kates placed fourth and Joel Rust was fifth.

Droste’s win came right at the end as he beat Cayden Carter to the checkered flag in the IMCA modifiers. Ronn Lauritzen, who had a get-together with Luke Wanninger on Lap 5, battled back to finish third. Randy Havlik ran fourth and Dan Chapman crossed the line for fifth place.

Another first-time winner at Marshalltown was Donavon Smith. Smith worked his way up through the  Amsoil IMCA stock cars feature after starting 12th. Smith went to the lead on Lap 9 and reached the checkered flag first. Brian Irvine, who started in 11th spot, finished second followed by Steve Meyer, Derek Reimer and Damon Murty.

The Toby K’s Hideaway mod lites feature race came down to the white flag. Josh May gained the lead when the white flag flew and held on after a strong battle with Randy Bryan Jimmy May and Mike Morrill throughout the race. Charlie Brown, who led early, finished second followed by Bryan, Morrill and Jimmy May.

Merv Chandler grabbed the lead on Lap 4 of the IMCA sport compacts and stayed out in front of the field. David Moorman, who lost the lead to Chandler, ran second. John Gill, Chad Larson and Duayne Herb rounded out the top five.

In the Mike’s Hard Lemonade IMCA hobby stock car feature race, lap traffic became a problem lat in the race. That set up an exciting final three laps as a lapped car spot in front of leader Kevin Fee, resulting in Fee spinning into Turn 2. Brice Udelhoven took the lead on Lap 10, but he made contact with Eric Stanton on the final lap and garrett Eilander had no where to go.

Stanton kept going an raced Eric Larson to the finish line. Larson edged Stanton at the end for the win. Benji Irvine finished third followed by Bill Bonnett and Austin Luellen.

The IMCA Modifieds ran a King of the Hill just like the Stock Cars did the week before and it was Cayden Carter, Kyle Brown and Ronn Lauritzen winning the first round. Cayden Carter beat Kyle Brown to advance on to the final to face Ronn Lauritzen. Lauritzen cashed in the extra hundred dollars to win the King of the Hill.

Final event of the night was the Stock Car Australian Pursuit, which is if you are passed you are eliminated. Curt Hook started out front but was passed by Brian Irvine.

Damon Murty started fifth and passed Michael Jaennette and Scott Pippert on lap two eliminating them. Irvine lead all eight laps to take the win meanwhile Murty finish second and Steve Meyer end up third.

This Friday night is the Dairy Queen Larry Wollam Season Championships, final night for track points. The Top 12 in points will be locked into the feature, all other cars will run a last-chance race for starting position.  Grandstands are $9 for adults, children 11 and under are free. Hot laps at 7 p.m. and racing starts at 7:30 p.m.
