From the files of the Newton Daily News

10 Years Ago This Week — Aug. 18-24, 2003

During the week of Aug. 19-23, the Newton Daily News reported: On Aug. 21, 2003, a container and it’s $320,000 cash contents fell out of a Lewis Systems armored truck travelling east on I-80 approximately 12 miles east of Newton. Authorities reported that 40 to 60 people stopped to gather up the spilled cash. A couple from Las Vegas and another couple from Colona, Ill. were arrested for theft. The Illinois couple was later released and not charged. Approximately $260,000 was not recovered. Electrical power company officials were still puzzled over the cause of a massive power outage that affected the northeastern U.S. and southern Canada on Aug. 14.
