Local winners at Iowa State Fair

• Gary Nolin of Monroe won fifth place in class C of the evening open class singles of the Horseshoe Pitching Tournament.

• Drew Johnson of Monroe claimed second place in the 13-18 age division in the Youth Checkers Tournament.

• Noah Henkenius of Monroe received third place in the 13-18 age division in the Youth Checkers Tournament.

• Sarah Vanderploeg of Prairie City won third place in other baked items in the Trust Your Recipe to Gurley’s competition.

• MHW Farms of Colfax won first place for shorn yearling ram, fourth and sixth place for yearling ewe, third place for pair of yearling ewes, fourth and sixth place for January ewe lamb, fourth place for pair of ewe lambs and second place for flock in the Dorset Sheep Show.

• Collin Kelly of Monroe won fifth place in the Children’s Joke Telling contest.

• Bonnie Swalwell-Eilert of Newton won first place in the Ladies’ Husband Calling contest.

• Sandra Swalla of Newton won second place in country pleasure western (18 and over) and third in open wester pleasure (18 and over) in the English Society Horse Show.

• Phyllis Olson of Newton received honorable mention in the Memories for Myrna dessert contest.

• Frank Hashman of Newton and Deb Davis of Ankeny won first place in the two players Pro-Am Championship Class of the Horseshoe Pitching Tournament.

• Ron Tangeman of Monroe and Gerald Leffler of Monroe won second place in class B in the two players Pro-Am division of the Horseshoe Pitching Tournament.

• Randy Clark of Monroe and Candy Amyx of Monroe won fourth place in class B in the two players Pro-Am division of the Horseshoe Pitching Tournament.

• Alexandra Cleverley of Newton won Champion Pony Breeds, first place in 1-, 2- and 3-year-old pony, first place in large aged ponies and fourth place in Pony western pleasure in the FFA Horse Show.

• Shania Roush of Newton won fifth place in 4- to 5-year-old Junior Horse Western Pleasure in the FFA Horse Show.
