Murty is Stock Car King of the Hill at Marshalltown

MARSHALLTOWN — Damon Murty proved to be the Stock Car King of the Hill last Friday at Marshalltown Speedway. In the final event of the night, Murty out raced Jay Schmidt and Justin Temeyer in the showdown.

Temeyer won the first round and advanced to the finals. Murty took on Schmidt in the elimination round and came out on top. Murty beat Temeyer in the final race.

Murty had posted the victory in the Amsoil IMCA stock car feature race earlier Friday night. Temeyer bolted to a strong lead but a couple cautions brought him back to the pack and on the restart after Lap 6, Murty, Robbie Merkle, Derek Reimer and Steve Meyer were right on his bumper.

Temeyer and Meyer got together two laps later. Murty went to the front and stayed there through another caution. Schmidt crossed the line in second place followed by Reimer, Jeff Wollam and Temeyer.

Merv Chandler broke into the lead after five laps and held off all the challengers to win the IMCA sport compacts feature. John Gill, who led early, finished second followed by Chad Larson and Danielle Webster.

Dusty Masolini took advantage of race leader Charlie Brown’s car losing its grip on the track on Lap 8 of the Toby K’s Hideaway mod lites feature race. Masolini gained the lead and never relinquished it. Josh May ran second and Andy Hennigar finished third. Randy Bryan and Mike Kennedy rounded out the top five.

Eric Stanton was the third and final leader in the Mike’s Hard Lemonade IMCA hobby stocks feature Friday night. Jennifer Hulin led the first two laps but a caution came out when the cars of Jonathan Juett and Keith Miner got tangled up. Eric Larson pushed past Hulin two laps later.

Stanton went around Larson on Lap 6 and pulled away for his fourth win of the season at MoTown. John Watson worked his way up from his 10th starting position to finish second. Bill Bonnett finished third, Kevin Fee was fourth and Hulin placed fifth.

A handfull of cars had trouble early in the Big 8 Tyre Center IMCA sport mods feature race with Neil Follett holding the lead. On the restart, Brandon Brinton grabbed the lead but it was Jenae Gustin’s later run to the front after a caution that produced the winning  order.

Gustin picked up her second win of the season with Paul Nagle in the runner-up spot. Brinton finished third and Jayme Duinink was fourth. Matt Lettow worked his way from 19th to claim the fifth-place spot.

In the Meskwaki Bingo Casino Hotel IMCA modified feature, Jon Snyder came out the victor through several lead changes and restarts. Snyder took over on Lap 12 and took the checkered flag for his fifth win of the season at Marshalltown. Ronn Lauritzen, Cayden Carter, Scott Simatovich and Kyle Krampe rounded out the top five.

Only two weeks of regular-season racing remains at Marshalltown Speedway. This coming Friday is Johnny Ray’s Sports Bar & Grille Night. Aug. 30 will be the Dairy Queen Larry Wollam Season Championships. Grandstands are $9 for adults, children 11 and under is $2. Hot laps at 7 p.m. and racing at 7:30 p.m.
