75 Years Ago This Week – 1938

A “Soap Box Derby” for Newton youth building their own miniature cars will be staged at the YMCA. The cost of material may not exceed $10, only one person can ride in the car in the final race, and no attachments for starting or propelling the car will be permitted…Employees of J.J. Newberry Store (112 N. Second Ave. W.) honored Mr. and Mrs. F.H. Searls at a farewell picnic… Camp Anderson is home to 250 national guardsmen here to preserve peace and order. Guardsmen stand guard duty near the Maytag Plant, in the Courthouse and along the boundaries of the camp…A formal demand upon the Governor that he open the Maytag Company for operation by its employees, closed since July 20 by the National Guard, was sent by E.H. Maytag, president of the Maytag Company.
