Baxter Fun Days kicks off today

Baxter’s 2013 Fun Days festival begins today, and this year’s theme is a “Blast From the Past,” celebrating the history of Baxter and its fun days tradition.

The weather outlook for the weekend is currently positive with high temperatures in the 80s and little chance of rain. There are isolated thunderstorms forecasted for Sunday afternoon.

The festivities will kick off Friday afternoon and go through Sunday afternoon. As is annual tradition, the biggest events of the year will be the parade which begins at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday and the Street Dance on Station Street featuring a DJ from 3 to 8 p.m. and Breakthru Band, an Iowa band well-known for their Jazz and R&B music, from 9 p.m. through 1 a.m. Tickets for the performance are $5 at the door.

The schedule for today is as follows:

Noon to 8 p.m.: Flower show public viewing at the school. Judging will go from 10 a.m. through noon.

5 to 7 p.m.: Bethany Church Supper held in the school cafeteria.

6:15 p.m.: Registration for the baby contest in the school’s west gym. The contest will run from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

7 p.m.: Truck and tractor pull for $10 admission. No coolers will be admitted. Beer and food will be available at 6 p.m.

There will also be fireworks at dusk at the truck/tractor pull location, with seating on Chad Flora fields. A military color guard presentation will precede the display. In the event of rain, the fireworks will be rescheduled to Saturday evening at dusk.

The schedule for Saturday is as follows:

7 a.m.: Registration for the 5k Fun Run/Walk. Walkers will start at 7:30 a.m. and runners will begin at 8 a.m.

9 a.m. to noon: Bake off at the Baxter Healthcare Center

9:30 a.m.: Line up for the parade at the sports complex. The parade will begin at 10:30 a.m.

After the parade, the Skykings event will take place at the Baxter Healthcare Center.

11 a.m. to 2 p.m.: Church lunch at the United Church of Christ in Baxter

11 a.m. to 2 p.m.: Baxter Early Learning Center is hosting kids activities with root beer floats, outdoor fun and indoor art.

11 a.m. to 3 p.m.: Park activities at Shady Park with food and fun for kids of all ages. A talent contest will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. with open entries.

11 a.m.: Registration and open start for the Second Annual “Cancer Schmancer Ride” benefitting the Above and Beyond Foundation on behalf of Lynette, Chad and Parker Richey.

Noon:  Registration for Sand Volleyball with play beginning at 12:30 p.m.

Noon to 4 p.m.: Car Rally at Pete and Repete Street Rods along Highway 17 in Baxter.

3 p.m. to 1 a.m.: Street Dance on Station Street featuring a DJ and the Breakthru Band. Admission is $5.

Events on Sunday will run through 2 p.m. and are as follows:

9 a.m.: Rolls and coffee to be followed by a church service at the Baxter Healthcare Center.

Noon: Registration for the Ag Olympics at the sports complex with events starting at 1 p.m.

Noon:  Kids’ water fight at the sports complex.

1:30 p.m.: Registration for the kickball tournament with play beginning at 2 p.m.

2 p.m.: Cornhole Tournament at Cadillac Jacks.
