Newton Police Department
• Phillip J. Brumer, 22, of Newton was charged with assault after officers were dispatched at 6:44 a.m. Saturday to 400 N. Second Ave. E. on report of an assault. The victim asked Brumer and another male to leave the apartment but asked them to return to acquire her phone charger from them. When Brumer arrived, the victim said he dragged her out in a hallway and punched her several times in the back of the head. There were visible rug burns on the victim’s knees and elbows. Brumer was released to appear in court.
• Ryan E. Dearinger, 41, of Newton was charged with fifth-degree theft after officers were dispatched at 8:10 p.m. Saturday to Fareway on report of a shoplifter. Upon arrival, officers were told that Dearinger was witnessed concealing a bottle of Jack Daniels. The total amount of the bottle was $25.72. Dearinger was released to appear in court.
