Area Roundup — Two area softball teams stumble in regional play; baseball teams play on

All three times Colfax-Mingo High's Tigerhawks and South Hamilton High's Hawks have tangled on the softball diamond this season, the outcomes have been one-run decisions.

That's how it was Tuesday in 2013 Iowa high school Class 2A, Region 6 play at Colfax. The Hawks ended the Tigerhawks' softball season in a 1-0 first-round game. Also in Region 6 action, Collins-Maxwell/Baxter High's Raiders saw their season conclude with a 6-0 loss to Madrid High's Tigers in Madrid.

At Colfax Tuesday, the Tigerhawks gave up one unearned run in the top of the first inning and South Hamilton made it stand up for the 1-0 win.

"I am shocked that we were shutout tonight. Amy Russell pitched a fantastic game and our defense, beyond the first inning, was excellent," said Bryan Poulter, Tigerhawk head coach. "We only came up with four hits tonight, a terrible time in the season to not be able to produce some runs."

Jade Lewis had two hits for C-M while Rylee Thompson and Rachel Forschler each had a hit. The Tigerhawks finished 17-16.

"I would like to thank our two seniors, Sydnie Fahrney and Rachel Forschler for their dedication to our program," Poulter said. "We are a young team, so the future is bright for the returning Tigerhawk softball players and the young players who will be joining the team next season. It is a shame the season came to an end tonight because it was a season of many hard fought games and exciting moments."

Madrid scored four times in the third then had single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to close out the contest. CMB senior Cheyanne Warne took the pitching loss, giving up six hits, walking six and striking out four.

For CMB at the plate, Payge Jurgens doubled while Mackenzie Schmits, Warne, senior third baseman Cortney Ubben and Abby Applegate each had a single. Senior center fielder Becky Williams and senior second baseman Brittany Peterson played their final games as Raiders.

In Class 2A, Region 5 play, Pella Christian's sofball team lost 12-8 to North Mahaska.

Lynnville-Sully High's Hawks play tonight in Iowa Class 1A, Region 5 quarterfinal action. The Hawks host English Valleys High's Bears at 7 p.m. in Sully. English Valleys decked Keota 16-6 in five innings on Monday in the opening round. With a win tonight, the Hawks could move into semifinal play on Friday in Sully. The 1A, Region 5 championship game is Monday in Williamsburg.
