Loebsack to host roundtable vets’ discussion

Rep. Dave Loebsack from Iowa’s 2nd Congressional District will be paying a visit to Newton and Jasper County on Tuesday.

Loebsack will first be visiting Colfax from 2:15 to 3:15 p.m. to meet with Julia Kern, director of the Colfax Main Street Program, as well as local business owners and members of the community.

The group will tour the downtown district of Colfax, taking the opportunity to view the area’s recent renovations funded through a downtown revitalization grant.

“He is meeting with local businesses and walking down Main Street to see what is going on in the community,” said Joe Hand, a member of Loebsack’s staff. “It’s to familiarize himself with the businesses in the town as well as meet the people and learn their concerns.”

After the tour of Colfax, Loebsack and his staff will attend a veteran’s round table discussion in Newton from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the American Legion Post 111 located at 1101 W. Fourth St. S.

The meeting will be an opportunity for local veterans to address Loebsack and his staff on veterans’ issues, whether they be personal matters that Veterans’ Affairs can handle or larger items requiring legislative attention.

The roundtable meeting is open to the public and to veterans throughout Jasper County who have any issues to address.

“We’ll have a case worker there to help with any issues that people might be having,” Hand said.

Loebsack said, in a press release, that veterans’ issues hit close to home for the representative.

“As a military parent, I believe that we have no greater responsibility as a nation than to care for our veterans with the same dignity and honor with which they have served our country,” said Loebsack. “I look forward to this opportunity to speak directly with veterans and their families about issues that are important to them.”
