Iowa remote-control abortion pill system targeted

DES MOINES (AP) — An Iowa anti-abortion organization says it has submitted to the state petitions with more than 20,000 signatures, asking for a ban on a remote control method of distributing abortion pills.

Iowa Right to Life’s petitions are aimed at a long-distance video system used by Planned Parenthood of the Heartland. The system lets a doctor in Des Moines deliver pills to patients in remote clinics around Iowa.

Mark Bowden is executive director of the Iowa Board of Medicine, and he said Tuesday that the board will review the petitions. Bowden says that If the group’s request is denied, the board has to state the reason or reasons.
