Newton girls soccer sets record with win at Osky

The Newton girls soccer team continued its undefeated season and set a school record with a 5-1 victory over Little Hawkeye Conference rival Oskaloosa Monday night.

Junior Amber Karsten led the Cardinals (10-0, 4-0) with a hat trick, scoring twice in the first half and once in the second. Senior Kaylie Rhoads added the team’s fourth goal, and fellow senior Stevi Eggers put the icing on the cake with the team’s fifth goal.

Newton’s 10-game win streak is a new record for the school, and there will be five more opportunities to extend that record before the regular season is over.

“We dominated the possession of the ball,” Newton coach Sackda Viravong said. “We gave away a gift to Osky on the PK, but we’ll take the victory. This is my fifth year at Newton HS and I’m very proud to bea part of our success this year.”

The Cardinals will put their streak back on the line when they host Adel-DeSoto-Minburn on Friday.
