Area Roundup: Hawks run away from field at Montezuma

The Hawks of Lynnville-Suly continuted their impressive season on the track and in the field events with a big win at Montezuma on Monday afternoon. The team had 18 boys record points on its way to a team total of 135, defeating the host Braves by eight points.

The leading scorer on the afternoon for the Hawks was Cale Van Wyk. Van Wyk racked of a total of 18.5 points for his team. He finished third in the 200-meter dash (24.34), first in the long jump (19 feet, 9 inches) and he also ran the second leg of the Hawks’ first place 4x400 team, which also included Payton Haack, Caden Doll and Jacob Walker.

Haack also finished fourth in the long jump with a jump measured at 18-7.5. Doll also had a big day for the Hawks. He finished second to teammate Walker (53.41) in the 400 with a time of 55.67. Doll also ran the anchor leg for the 400 shuttle hurdle relay team that finished second on the day by .01 seconds with a time of 1:01.76.

Nathan Russell kicked off the race for that relay team, and he finished third in the 110 hurdles for the Hawks with a time of 16.10. Russell also won the discus by more than seven feet with his throw of 121-4.

The Hawks’ 4x100 team finished in first place with a time of 44.85. That team consisted of Walker, Malin Meyer, Bailee Samson and Meliek Meyer. The Meyer brothers along with Samson and Brandon Dunsbergen also won the 4x200 (1:34.18). Dunsbergen also finished fifth in the 200 at 24.66.

Sage Ehresman placed sixth for the Hawks in the 100 at 12.11 seconds.

Finally, Darin Hofer won the 100 hurdles with a time of 15.78. Hofer also ran on the second place shuttle hurdle relay team along with Russel, Doll and Brady Van Wyk.

PCM boys golf win at North Mahaska

The Class 2A No. 1 Prairie City-Monroe boys golf team returned to its winning ways Tuesday, shooting a 150 to win the North Mahaska Invitational. Fellow Jasper County School Colfax-Mingo took third with a 160.

PCM senior and Class 2A top-ranked Hunter Van Veen brought home medalist honors with a one-under 34 thanks to birdies on two of his first three holes. Teammate Devon Woody won a playoff to finish third out of the 44-golfer field with a 36.

Justin Beener carded a 38, Ryan Jennings had a 42 and Ethan Kain shot a 47 to round out PCM’s scores for the day. The Mustangs’ JV also picked up a victory, led by Michael Neff’s medalist round of 37.

The Mustangs will be back in action at sectionals in Pella on Friday.

CMB girls lose big to Nevada

The Collins-Maxwell-Baxter girls fell to Nevada 10-0 on Tuesday night in a game that was never really competitive. Nevada fired 62 shots on the night and controlled the game all the way to the finish. CMB keeper Lexi Breon did what she could in net, but the volume of shots was too much to handle.

The team’s next game is on Thursday at home against Knoxville.
