PCM girls capture conference title

The Prairie City-Monroe girls golf team has been consistently good all season, and that didn’t change with arguably the team’s biggest meet to this point on Wednesday.

The Mustangs shot a 382, just one stroke shy of a school record, to win the Heart of Iowa Conference meet at Honey Creek Golf Club in Boone. Nevada finished second with a 404 and South Hamilton was third with a 432, while fellow county school Collins-Maxwell-Baxter finished eighth at 529.

“I am very happy for the girls, as they were very nervous going into today’s meet, worrying about the course conditions and the weather,” PCM coach Val Edwards said. “We also knew Nevada and South Hamilton would probably be our toughest competition.”

Maddie Peters led the Mustangs and was the overall runner-up with a 94. Cassidy Van Veen was next in for PCM with a 95, while Kelsey Van Veen and Rachel Phifer were directly behind with 96 and 97, respectively. All four earned all-conference honors for their rounds, and Kelsey Van Veen carded a new personal best. Taylor Phifer and Hannah Hugen recorded non-scoring rounds of 106 and 108.

Leading CMB on the day was Anna Peters, who carded a 121. Brittaney Davies was next up with a 128, Morgan Iske finished with a 136 and Courtney Clapper rounded out the team’s scoring with a 144.

Competing alone was Colfax-Mingo’s Olivia Maggard, who finished with a 108 and was just three strokes outside of a medal.

Weather permitting, the Mustangs will be back in action at a 14-team, 18-hole invite at Moravia. The Raiders will be off until next Tuesday and Colfax-Mingo is scheduled to appear at Newton’s home meet on Friday.
