Grinnell Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution

Regent Darlene Leib led the regular meeting of the Grinnell Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution on April 13.

After the Pledge of Allegiance, the American Creed, the Preamble to the Constitution and Chaplain Devotions, Kris Macy gave a report from the President General of NSDAR.

Registrar Barbara Hug reported the following regarding membership: new member Patricia McIlrath and transfer-in June Hand for a total of 56 members. Approved new members are Bonnie Ellis, Nancy Brown and Suzanne Van Zandt. Applications for Phyllis Snook and Lynn Peterson are pending.

The American History Report, given by Susan Wendell, told of important events that have happened in April. One such event was on April 3, 1860, when the Pony Express service began as the first rider departed St. Joseph, Mo. For $5 an ounce, letters were delivered 2,000 miles to California within 10 days.

For the Flag Report, Lelah Main showed how the American flag is to be displayed.

The Indian Report by Linda Hatch told that the early Iowa Indians settled in the north east corner of Iowa. They lived in small communities where they grew corn, squash and other crops on terraces on the bluffs along the Mississippi river.

The National Defense message was given by Dee Meyers on the topic of Thomas Jefferson whose birthday is celebrated April 13. Jefferson started his public service at the age of 25 and was still active when he died on July 4, 1826.

Betty Carr reminded the group that the Good Citizenship program will be at the next meeting in Grinnell.

During the business meeting, a collection was taken to pay for the cost of providing the Grinnell and Newton public libraries with a subscription to the American Spirit, the DAR magazine. Also, a thank-you letter was read from the Veteran’s Hospital in Memphis, Tenn., for the nine lap robes sent by the chapter. The lap robes are being used in the spinal cord injury unit.

A memorial service was held by Chaplin Mary Rethmeier for recently deceased members Lilly Magilton and Laura Gene McCumber.

Patricia McIlrath, Susanne Van Zandt, Bonnie Ellis and Nancy Brown received the Oath of Membership given by Regent Leib and Chaplain Mary Rethmeier.

Maretta Grattan gave a program on the Titanic, a luxury British passenger liner that sank in the North Atlantic Ocean on April 15, 1912, after colliding with an iceberg during her maiden voyage from Southampton, U.K., to New York City, U.S. The sinking of the Titanic caused the deaths of 1,502 people in one of the deadliest peacetime maritime disasters in modern history.
