A volunteer community service coordinator is needed for the Community Garden.

The volunteer community service coordinator will assist two non-profit 4-H groups and the Salvation Army. The position will provide an opportunity to gain knowledge and insight into gardening, to meet new people and to enjoy the results of volunteer time and talent.

Responsibilities and duties of the volunteer community service coordinator include meeting as needed with Master Gardeners, 4-H youth and parents; developing a schedule that includes 4-H members and parents, community, church and civic groups that share responsibility for the planning, caring and harvesting of the Community Garden; taking inventory and responsibility of equipment belonging to the garden; and taking harvested produce to the Salvation Army each time food is harvested.

Qualifications for the position include a willingness to work with youth, parents and community groups in coordinating the work assignments of producing a vegetable garden; good organizational and follow up skills; good communicator via phone, email and simple newsletter articles; and some interest in gardening (do not need to be an expert in gardening as this is the responsibility of the Master Gardeners).

Interested individuals should call the Iowa State University Extension Office at (641) 792-6433 or stop in the office at 550 N. Second Ave. W. in Newton on or before April 30.
