Tigerhawks take third in Knoxville Invite

The Colfax-Mingo boys golf team took part in the Knoxville Invite on Saturday afternoon in an 18-hole meet that included nine teams from throughout the state.

The Tigerhwaks ended up taking third place as a team with a 346 in a solid collective showing from the experienced group. The Tigerhawks finished behind only Pella (317), who had each of their four counting players shoot 82 or below, and Grinnell, which shot a 334.

Sophomore Jimmy Abell was the low man for the Tigerhawks, shooting a very solid 83. Abell’s 83 placed him seventh overall in a meet that included more than 50 golfers, and included pars at holes five, 13, 14 and 18.

Taking second place on the Tigerhawks’ team was fellow sophomore Brady DeJoode, who shot a team low of 39 on the back nine in a round that totaled 84. DeJoode parred holes three, six, nine, 10, 12, 15 and 17.

Third on the team was senior Austin Yoakum. Yoakum shot an 87 with a 42 on the back nine. Yoakum tends to post lower scores. So while it’s a very good sign for the Tigerhawks that the two sophomores shot low scores, they will need Yoakum to be at his best if they hope to contend in the Heart of Iowa Conference for the rest of the season. Yoakum’s round included pars at holes five, nine and 15 with a birdie at 12.

The other senior, Colton Russell, shot an 89 for the Tigerhawks. His round was evenly split between the two nines, shooting 45 and 44 respectively, and included pars on one, 12 and 18.

Freshman Mason Mosher shot a non-counting 92 in a tale of two nines. Mosher shot a team-high 50 on the front nine, but he recovered well for a solid 42 on the back. He birdies holes 10 and 1. He also had pars on seven, 13 and 18.

The next scheduled meet for Colfax-Mingo will be held on Monday, April 23 at PCM.
