Newton girls soccer picks up two wins Saturday

The Newton girls soccer team continued its strong start to the young season at Southeast Polk on Saturday, earning two victories and improving to 3-0 overall.

The Cardinals’ first game was a 2-0 victory over Indianola. While junior Amber Karsten was moved to the defensive side of the ball for the game, Newton had no problems on offense. The Cards outshot Indianola 12-4 and got a first-half goal from sophomore Anna Barr and a second-half clincher from senior Kaylie Rhoads. Both goals came in combination plays.

The second game of the day against fellow Jasper County school Prairie City-Monroe, was a bit more of a challenge. After senior Kristin Samson put Newton up 1-0, Newton coach Sackda Viravong switched Karsten back to a forward position, the Mustangs (2-2, 1-0 Heart of Iowa Conference) got two quick goals from McKinzie Tjaden and Kennah Walters to take a 2-1 lead. However, Rhoads tied it up just before halftime with her second goal of the day.

Rhoads wasn’t finished though, and scored two straight goals in the second half for her first career hat trick for the Cards. Freshman Victoria Jordan scored Newton’s fifth goal of the day and the Cards held a 21-4 shots on goal advantage.

Newton will open up conference play against Pella Christian at H.A. Lynn Field on Tuesday, while PCM will travel to Nevada.
