Herman Bollhoefer was born on Aug. 1, 1918, at the farm southwest of Haverhill, to Edward H. and Martha Freiberg Bollhoefer. He attended Van Cleve Consolidated School and graduated valedictorian of the Class of 1936. Herman served honorably in the United States Navy. On June 11, 1944, Herman married Alta Hansen in Clarion, Iowa and had three daughters: Donna, and twins, Janice and Jean. His interests were many: farming until 2005, camping, traveling, reading, and being a handyman. He was a two term President of Marshall County Farm Bureau, Jefferson Township Director, and a consultant to John Deere, for whom he made improvements on the 239 mounted corn picker. Herman was a member of the First United Church of Christ in Marshalltown. He always had a smile on his face and a kind word to say.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 68 years, Alta; children: Donna (Phillip) Walker of Florida; Janice (Jeffery) Howes of Idaho; and Jean (Michael) La Velle of Arizona. Grandchildren: Kevin (Serena) Walker of Arkansas; Brennan Howes of Texas; and Parker Howes of New York; sisters: Norma Reynolds of Marshalltown, and Laura Hinthorne of Washington. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.

Herman is preceded in death by parents; brothers, David and Arnold Bollhoefer; and sisters, Wanda Faidley and Marie Harrington.

He was so loved by all.
