Newton girls take third as a team at EBF Invite

The Newton girls finished with 98 team points at their first outdoor meet at Eddyville-Blakes burg on Thursday. Here are the notable finishers:

Senior Alexis DesPlanque finished sixth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 29.97 Freshman Grace Coen won the 800 with a time of 2:21.29. Coen also took the top spot in the 3000 at 10:45.07. Senior Josie Thurmond finished fourth in the 1500 with a time of 5:44.92. Newton took first and second in the shot put when fellow juniors Michaela Bleeker and Madison Bangall threw 35-0.50 and 34-07.0 respectively.

“We had a great start to our outdoor season last night with a third place finish. We were missing some of the shared spring sport athletes so had to do some adjustments to the line-up. I am pleased with our performances,” Coach Rachel Tomas said. “We had several top three finishes and season or personal best times. The throwers had a big night for us by scoring two in both events.”
