Newton boys track begins outdoor season

The Newton Boys track team opened its outdoor season at Southeast Polk on Thursday. The team finished fourth overall with some notable standouts.

Senior Derrick Hurt won the shot with a throw of 55 feet, 4 inches and the disc with a throw of 152-07. Freshman Cooper McDermott won the 3200 with a time of 10:17.75 with teammate Christian Laube close behind in third with a time of 10:21.23. McDermott also took second in the 1600 with a time of 4:45. Jacob Thomas took fourth in the 1600 with a time of 4:51. Runner-ups also included Deonne Harris running in the 110 high hurdles with a time of 15.20, 0.01 of a second behind the first place finisher, and Dakota Hills ran the open 400 with a time of 53.06. Other top finishers included Andrew Clements placing fourth in the open 400 with a time of 53.97, Zakk Weatherly took 5th in the shot with a throw of 44-09, the 4x100 of Harris, Williams, Hills, and Clements placed fifth with a time of 46.00, while the distance medley of Kimmel, Banfield, Brass and Cook took sixth with a time of 3:59.09.

“Overall we were very pleased with our first outdoor meet taking fourth behind some of the larger 4A schools. The boys ran hard despite the cool weather and the wind. It looks like it could be a cool spring so we are going to have to work on getting acclimated to the cool weather, especially later in the evenings,” Coach Tom Bartello said. “The only good thing about the weather is the fact that all the other teams are in the same boat as we are this year so it may take some time before we start seeing event times and distances like last year. Despite the weather we still did have some athletes run season or individual PRs.”
