Police Blotter

Newton Police Department

• Jozef M. Elbino, 31, of Des Moines was charged with driving while license suspended, operation without registration and failure to have insurance after authorities stopped him at 4:50 p.m. Sunday at Highway 14 and South 12th Avenue West after observing a passenger possibly drinking beer in the car. The police determined Elbino did not have a valid driver’s license and saw an open can of beer in the car. The passenger — Aurr B. Deng, 30, of Des Moines — was cited with open container. She was released to appear in court, and Elbino was taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Christopher B. Hasselbrink, 21, of Newton was arrested and charged with public intoxication, third offense, after authorities responded to a complaint at 8:49 p.m. Tuesday of a possibly intoxicated male in a hallway at 209 N. Second Ave. W. Hasselbrink smelled of alcohol, and a breath test indicated a blood alcohol content of .232. He was taken to the Jasper County Jail.

A criminal charge is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty. It is the policy of the Newton Daily News to release the names of individuals charged with a crime who are 16 and older.
