NHS to present 'Night of Jazz' on Friday

The Newton Senior High School Band Department’s annual Night of Jazz will be at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the high school Center for Performance.

The Berg Middle School Jazz Band, comprised of approximately 40 seventh and eighth grade students who have been practicing since November, will start the evening with a bang. The middle school jazz band, under the direction of Seth Banwell, will perform the following selections: “Mission: Impossible Theme,” “It Don’t Mean A Thing,” and “Ya Just Gotta Rock ‘n’ Roll.”

The Newton Senior High School Jazz Lab, which rehearses weekly after school, will perform three selections for jazz enthusiasts: “Summertime,” “My Funny Valentine,” and “Chameleon.”

The Newton Senior High School Jazz I has selected six tunes to perform that jazz lovers will surely enjoy. Selections are: “Hay Burner,” “’Round Midnight,” “Switch In Time,” “Afro Blue,” “Freddie Freeloader,” and “Two Seconds to Midnight.” The Jazz Lab and Jazz I are under the direction of Jim Bereends.

Special this year will be an appearance by the NewtonSenior High School Jazz Choir, Midnight Express, directed by Norm Grimm.

Dessert will be served at the conclusion of the concert in the high school cafeteria. Admission to the concert is $5 for adults and $3 for students.
