Mr. Kay Astelle

Kay Astelle, 87, of Newton, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2013, at Park Centre Health Care, under the care of WesleyLife Hospice.

A funeral service for Kay will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15, at the Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton. Friends may call at the funeral home from 11 a.m. Friday until service time. Burial will be in Newton Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorials are being designated in Kay’s name to WesleyLife Hospice and may be left at the funeral home.

Kay, the son of John Francis and Signe Katheryn (Fosberg) Astle, was born May 8, 1925, near Logan, Utah, and was where he attended school. Kay served his country during World War II, with the U.S. Navy.

On Aug. 26, 1949, Kay was united in marriage with Dorothy C. Taylor in Helena, Mont. She preceded him in death on Jan. 9, 1990. A resident of the Newton area since 1949, he was employed by the Maytag Company, farmed in Colorado and later was a custodian at Lincoln Elementary School in Newton, retiring in 1988. On Aug. 18, 2007, Kay was united in marriage with Dorothy Lea Doland-Grush in Newton. He had devoted his life to his family and friends and was a past member of the Immanuel Baptist Church in Newton, and enjoyed woodworking.

Those left to honor Kay’s memory include his wife, Dorothy Lea of Newton; his sons, Stan (Jan) Astelle of Grinnell and Darrell (Candy) Astelle of Waterloo; his daughter, Lois (Danny) LaRue of Scribner, Neb.; his 13 grandchildren and 52 great-grandchildren; his 61 great-great-grandchildren and three great-great-great-grandchildren; his brothers, Dee (Gayla) Astle of Wyoming and Leon (Blanche) Astle of Logan, Utah; and his many friends.

Kay was preceded in death by his parents; his first, wife Dorothy C.; a grandson, John Chriss; a great-great granddaughter, Danielle Elizabeth; a great-great-great grandson, Kaleb; and seven brothers and sisters.
