Area Roundup: Four area wrestlers qualify for state
Three area wrestlers will make a return trip to Wells Fargo Arena for the state wrestling tournament, while one will be making the trip for the first time.
Colfax-Mingo's Jimmy Abell (106 pounds) and Dylan Albright (170) and Lynnville-Sully's Meliek Meyer (152) and Caden Doll (160) all qualified for state with their performances in a Class 1A district meet at Pleasantville. Out of the four, Meyer is the only first-time qualifier.
Abell (ranked No. 5 in Class 1A) and Albright each finished second in the districts to gain entry to state for the second year in a row. Abell scored a pin in wrestlebacks, while Albright earned a 10-4 decision.
For the Hawks, Doll earned the area's only district title with a major decision and 3-1 sudden victory in the finals. Meyer battled his way through the consolation bracket to earn a wrestleback, in which he pinned Pleasantville's Matt Prill. The Hawks finished second as a team and had third-place finishes from Malin Meyer (120), Levi Bennington (145) and Shane Thompson (285).
"I'm very proud of the L-S wrestlers," Hawk coach Steve Northcutt said. "L-S as a team finished second, which I couldn't be happier with. Everyone wrestled above and beyond."
All four wrestlers will be in action Thursday morning.
Raider girls advance with victory over East Marshall
The Collins-Maxwell-Baxter girls basketball team extended its season by at least one game with a 59-44 victory over East Marshall in a Class 3A regional first round game in Baxter Saturday night.
CMB junior Abbie Haupert dropped an enormous 33 points on East Marshall, helping the Raiders earn a 32-23 advantage in the second half. Not to be overshadowed was senior Shelby Berg, who recorded a triple double with 10 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists. Sophomore Lexi Breon joined her teammates in double figures with 10 points.
The Raiders will now hit the road to take on Mid-Prairie in Wellman Wednesday night. Mid-Prairie enters the game with a record of 16-6.
Colfax-Mingo girls defeat Madrid, advance to second round
The Colfax-Mingo girls basketball team used a big 35-20 second half to defeat Madrid Saturday night and advance to the second round of Class 2A regional play.
C-M will travel to Woodward Tuesday night to take on Woodward-Granger which enters the game with a record of 17-4.
PCM boys basketball locks up conference title
The Prairie City-Monroe boys basketball team locked up its fourth consecutive Heart of Iowa Conference championship after decimating Saydel (1-19) 68-36 on Friday.
The Mustangs (20-1, 17-1 Heart of Iowa Conference) got out to a 16-5 lead in the opening quarter and only continued to extend that margin the rest of the way. Leading the way in scoring for PCM were seniors Nathan Vande Wall with 16 points, Ethan Kain with 14 and Michael Neff with 13.
Hawk boys grab share of SICL title
The Lynnville-Sully boys basketball team (18-3) boys team clicnhed a share of the South Iowa Cedar League conference title after cruising past English Valleys on Friday night following a dominating second half.
The Hawks (18-3, 18-2) only led by four at halftime, but outscored English Valley 43-9 in the second half and won going away with a final of 64-28. Junior Darin Hofer led the way for L-S with 13 points, while junior TJ Cunningham had 12 and freshman Connor Cullen had 10.
“We struggled offensively and defensively in the first half,” LS coach Nick Harthoorn said. “We brought our intensity in the second half, and our performances both ends of the floor improved. I am happy for the guys that they could bring home a share of the SICL title.”
Bondurant-Farrar ends PCM girls’ season
After a 10-game win streak to close out the regular season, the Prarie City-Monroe girls basketball team’s season came to a sudden end with a 48-42 loss at Bondurant-Farrar Saturday night.
The Mustangs finished with a record of 15-7 overall and 13-5 in the Heart of Iowa Conference, which placed them third.
