• James A. Bonnett, 28, of Newton was charged with two counts of fifth-degree theft after authorities responded to a shoplifting complaint at 3:49 p.m. Friday at Hy-Vee. Bonnett was charged for allegedly entering Hy-Vee twice, at 8:51 a.m. and 3:25 p.m. Friday, and taking pizza and cookies from the deli area without paying for them. The total value of the items was $33. Employees obtained his license plate number, and police located Bonnett at his home at 2305 E. 19th St. N. #7A. He was charged and released to appear in court.
• Shelby L. Eaton, 19, of Colfax was cited with failure to obey a traffic device after traveling west in the 1400 block of First Avenue East at 12:22 p.m. Saturday and entering the intersection at East 14th Street North without stopping at a red light. She collided with two vehicles, including a southbound vehicle driven by Richard E. Tomlin, 63, of Des Moines and then an eastbound vehicle driven by Bradley J. Ratcliff, 30, of Newton. No one was injured. Damages were estimated at $3,000 to each of Eaton and Tomlin’s vehicles. Ratcliff’s vehicle was not damaged.
• Trent L. Little, 21, of Monroe and Joel A. McCalester, 22, of Newton each were charged with public intoxication after authorities responded to a complaint of an altercation at 1:52 a.m. Saturday in the 600 block of East Eighth Street South. Several individuals were at the scene, and McCalester was charged after failing sobriety maneuvers and showing a blood alcohol content of .168. Little was charged for allegedly being intoxicated and charged with interference with official acts for attempting to leave the scene. Both men were taken to the Jasper County Jail.
• Shantell C. Rice, 26, was charged with driving while license suspended, operation without registration and failure to have insurance after authorities stopped her at 2:54 p.m. Friday in the 100 block of First Avenue West for having an inoperable brake light. She was released to appear in court.
• Stevie L. Skow, 24, of Newton was arrested and charged with public intoxication after authorities responded to a complaint of an intoxicated female at 12:47 a.m. Saturday at 818 E. 16th St. N. The suspect was gone when police arrived, and they located her in an apartment building at 1453 N. 11th Ave. E. She was charged for allegedly being intoxicated and taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• David L. Bucklin, 42, of Newton was charged with public intoxication after employees of the Law Enforcement Center observed him urinating on the building at 4:43 p.m. Sunday. He admitting to having consumed six beers, was charged and taken to jail.
• Sonya A. Grandstaff, 37, of Kellogg was charged Sunday with fifth-degree theft for allegedly obtaining electricity from an unauthorized connection by making a connection to the Rock Creek Grange at 12164 N. 39th Ave. E. for $195 in electricity during November and December. The Rock Creek Alliance reported the incident to authorities after receiving an unusually high bill. Grandstaff was charged and released to appear in court.
• Molly B. Moore, 47, of Kellogg was cited for open container as a passenger after authorities were called to assist a motorist at 5:20 p.m. Sunday in the 5300 block of Highway 6 and observed Moore in the vehicle with an open container of alcohol. She was released to appear in court.
• Scott M. Nestvedt, 32, of Colfax was arrested by Warren County authorities on a Jasper County warrant and transferred into the custody of local authorities at 11:58 a.m. Friday. He was taken to the Jasper County Jail.
A criminal charge is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty. It is the policy of the Newton Daily News to release the names of individuals charged with a crime who are 16 and older.
