Newton basketball goes 1-2 over the weekend

Although it was a tough night on the road for the Newton boys and girls basketball teams Friday night, the Cardinal girls recovered for a victory on Saturday.

The Newton girls (7-11, 2-7 Little Hawkeye Conference) suffered a 36-35 heartbreaker at Grinnell on Friday before rebounding for a 35-30 victory over Boone in a makeup game on Saturday.

Senior Kaylie Rhoads led the Cards in scoring in both games, going for 15 against Grinnell and 21 against Boone. In the Grinnell game, Newton trailed 16-5 after the first quarter and 22-15 at halftime, but rallied in the second before falling just one point shy of tying things up.

Fellow senior Michelle Marquis added nine points in the game, sophomore Sarah Kalkhoff had four, senior Anna Latcham and sophomore Shelby Gray had two and senior Kristin Samson had one.

Newton once again rallied on Saturday, trailing 25-22 going into the fourth quarter before a 13-5 run in the fourth closed out a victory. Rhoads’ 21 points came on a 7-for-12 shooting night from the field, which included 2-for-4 from three-point range.

Senior Katelyn Camp added five points against Boone, while Marquis had four, Samson had three and Latcham had another two.

The Cardinal boys (6-10, 2-7) had an equally tough night in Grinnell, falling 50-29 to the Tigers. Grinnell held Newton to single digits in three of the four quarters, including just four points in the fouth.

Sophomore Nick Easley paced the Cards with eight points, while senior Andrew Clements, junior Daquan Allen and sophomore Tyler Wood each added five. Seniors Jesse Bates and Collin Reynolds and freshman Joe Banfield rounded out the team’s scoring with two points each.

Both Newton teams will host Oskaloosa on Tuesday.
