Body Shop organizer thanks community

To the editor:

We wanted to thank the Newton Daily News for a wonderfully written article by Nicole Wiegand announcing the opening of The Body Shop at Newton High School.

The “shop”, which is sponsored by the girls’ swimming team at NHS, has personal care items ranging from toothpaste to body spray to nail clippers. There is no cost for these items and the store is open to all students. At this time, The Body Shop has served 38 customers and counting.

In addition, we also wanted to thank the community and the teachers of the Newton Community School District for their support. Aleya Salon and Walgreens have generously donated products, while many community members have donated money and/or goods as well.

Teachers in our district have sent items through school mail and have helped to fill our store. A special shout out to all the elementary educators who sent products — a few even sent entire boxes. A couple of people recall having to purchase their own personal care items while in high school and could personally relate to The Body Shop’s goals.

Our venture will require ongoing donations. Donations and products may be dropped off at Newton High School’s main office in care of Sarah Patterson, or mailed to NHS. We are currently in need of lotion for both boys and girls, deodorant for girls, and lip balm, such as Blistex or Carmex.

Products of all types are welcomed at any time. Please feel free to call me at (641) 792-5797, ext. 2251, or email me at pattersons@newton.k12.ia.us with questions or suggestions.
