Newton basketball sweeps Knoxville Friday

It was a good night for Newton basketball in Knoxville on Friday, as both the boys and girls teams earned conference victories.

The Cardinal boys (5-9, 2-6 Little Hawkeye Conference) had a dominant night on both sides of the ball, defeating the Panthers 65-29. Newton held Knoxville to single digits in each of the first three quarters with tallies of three, eight and five points.

Sophomore Tyler Wood led the charge for the Cards with 18 points on a 5-for-9 shooting night from three-point range. Things were wide-open for Newton after that, however, as 12 total Cardinals got in on the scoring action.

Next up on the scoring sheet were senior Collin Reynolds, junior Michael Miller and freshman Joe Banfield, who each had six points. Senior Jacob Hill and juniors Daquan Allen and Chandler Sturtz all contributed five, junior Jesse Bates and sophomore Nick Easley had four and sophomores Devin Shores, Michael Barr and Jarom Williams rounded things out with two apiece. Miller led the team with six rebounds, while Allen recorded four steals.

In the girls’ game, Newton (5-10, 2-6) also held Knoxville to single-digits in the first three quarters with totals of six, five and eight. The Cardinals built a lead of 25-11 at halftime and stretched it out with a 31-point second half, ultimately winning 56-34.

Both teams will have some nonconference action early this week as the girls will host Boone at 7:30 tonight and the boys will take on Carlisle at home Tuesday.
